Buying Guide

Durability

When it comes to tools, particularly, survival tools for the great outdoors, it is best to stay away from the less costly products. When you purchase a lighter for survival needs, it is best to ensure the lighter is capable of withstanding the abuse of the outdoors. When you purchase a lighter, you literally get what you pay for. A survival lighter’s durability is an important feature to look for when you purchase one.

Use

A lighter for an emergency kit or an outdoor activity makes this an imperative criteria. You are going to want your lighter to be durable, and be resistant to the weather conditions.

Versatility

In order for a survival lighter to have versatility, it must be able to be used in a variety of ways. A lighter is a good investment when it can provide light and heat during an emergency or when camping.

Water Resistant

As we are well aware, water is the fire’s biggest enemy. In addition, it is also the enemy of your survival lighter. What if you drop your non-waterproof lighter in some water or snow? Or if you are attempting to light it during a rainstorm? You will be out of luck and without fire with a lighter that is not water-resistant.

Weather Resistance

When comparing flames–a direct one is similar to a torch. Whereas, a flame that is indirect, is much the same as a match. Some survival lighters use flames that are indirect; which can be very frustrating when trying to light it in the windy.

However, you want a lighter that has a more direct flame. These survival lighters make the flame they provide less prone to being blown out. A direct flame lighter promises to be more efficient at providing a lasting fire.

Expert Tips

How to Choose the Right Lighter

How do you know what lighter type is the best one for your needs? Are you an outdoors person who spends a lot of time outside? Or are you looking for a lighter for an emergency kit? Do you know what the weather conditions will be? How much cash are you willing to spend on a lighter. These are all very important questions to ask yourself when searching for the perfect survival lighter.

The Many Uses of a Survival Lighter

There are so many different ways a lighter can be used, such as:

  • It can light a fire to keep us warm, or cook a meal
  • You can boil water (sometimes to sanitize)
  • Useful as a means of illumination
  • Wards of any dangerous predators

When discussing the powers of fire–it can be a source for energy or heat. When we have a capable lighter, these powers are simple to achieve at any time or place we need them.

The next feature when it comes to lighters is that most of the low-cost products do work. At least they do a majority of the time. A lighter that is disposable will light a fire; however, they are not the most reliable choice for survival. A disposable lighter cannot be reused. They cannot be refilled and do not have durability in water, snow, or other moisture conditions. As well, they are not resistant to the wind.

A lighter that is disposable will, for the most part, serve its primary functions. However, these types of lighters are not sufficient for a person who is serious about survival.

The Dangers of Using a Disposable Lighter

Even though a lighter can have many helpful uses, if not handled carefully a lighter can be dangerous. Besides the obvious danger the flame poses, the fluid can be equally threatening. The lighting fluid you put in your lighter is very flammable. Therefore, should you spill any fluid ensure you completely soak all the liquid with some paper towels. Then throw the paper towels away in a safe place. Wash your hands completely with hot water and soap. Also, if you get any fluid in your eyes or an open wound ensure to seek medical assistance right away.

In the event of a burn by a lighter, do not put ice on the burned area. Run some cold water over the area, avoid covering the burned area. Immediately seek the advice of a medical professional or a person trained in first-aid emergencies.

Tips for Using a Disposable Lighter

A disposable lighter has so many uses. You can light candles (for emergency use or mood setting), light a campfire, or heat things up. A lighter has almost as many uses as a pocket knife does.

Setting Fire to the Water

Here is a little trick you can try if you are on a romantic camping trip. Sprinkle some lighter fluid over a small area of water and catch it on fire. Because water is heavier than lighter fluid, the flames will dance over the water creating a beautiful sight.

Caution: Do not use too much water when attempting this trick; in addition, have a fire extinguisher handy–just in case.

Repairing Frayed Rope

Are the ends of your nylon or synthetic ropes frayed? If they are, there is no need to deem them useless and toss them in the trash. Instead, try this little trick. Using the flame of your lighter, you can burn these frayed ends, ever so gently. The act of burning these frayed ends enables the material to become restored by forming a blackened material that acts as a sealant. Later, you can chip away at it and re-shape the rope’s ends.

Caution: Ensure not to burn the rope too closely. You only need to char the areas in an attempt to make the frays stick together again.

Using a Lighter to Set/Put Out a Fire

First, let’s start by admitting you will not be able to redeem a complete burning building using this tip. However, it can be a fun trick to try with a bamboo skewer and your lighter.

First, put a little fluid on the end of the bamboo skewer then steady it on some type of stand, ensuring to keep all flammable materials out of its reach. Take your lighter, light a flame and then catch the tip of the skewer on fire. A few inches beneath the skewer light the flame on your lighter. The flame should begin to flicker right away because the lighter is underneath it. Continue doing this for a couple of seconds, eventually, the fire on the skewer will burn out.

Caution: Don’t let the flame on your lighter touch the skewer at any time–this only enables the fire to continue burning. Ensure you have some water or sand nearby to use for extinguishing the flames if needed. If the lighter is too difficult to hold for a long time (it may get pretty hot) then light a candle and use the flame on the candle (utilize a paper cup to catch any wax drippings to prevent hot wax from flowing onto your fingers). In addition, you can cut the base of the cup into the shape of a cross, put the candle through this cut and the base of the cup will then act as a wax catcher.

Other Factors

Protection

It is common knowledge that when using a lighter one needs to also ensure it is carefully protected. Upon first glance, a lighter appears fairly harmless; however, if you do not take precautions that little lighting device can become a dangerous item. Particularly, if you have small children. As we are well aware, children are very curious and like to play with anything they can get their little hands on.

Fire and burns to children playing with fire are very common. Lighters are becoming more popular fire-starting devices than matches. Therefore, it is imperative to teach children the dangers of a lighter.

It is completely normal for a child to be fascinated with fire. If you discover your child has started playing with matches or lighters, it is best to treat the situation in a calm manner. The best way to handle this is to explain to your child that lighters are a tool for adults only. You need to find safe ways your child can participate when using fire. Allow them to blow out candles, or put charcoal on the grill before you light it. By doing this, your child will grow up learning how to use fire responsibly.

Safety Hazards

There are many safety hazards when using a lighter. Not only with the flame, but also the lighter fluid. A lighter should be kept away from any heat sources, flames, sparks or any other sources of ignition. Ensure there is an appropriate amount of ventilation in the area when you use a butane lighter. Inhalation of the gases a lighter produces can cause health and respiratory ailments.

In addition, ensure you keep lighters, matches, and other devices for fire-starting out of the reach of small children. Also, educate your children about the dangers of fire and teach them how to responsibly treat fire.

Ensure whenever you are using a lighter or matches, there is nothing around to distract you. Both items are extremely flammable and can be dangerous if used around anything flammable. Remember, a trash can is not an ashtray, therefore, do not throw a match into it unless you are absolutely sure it is out completely.
