Ready or Safe:  The rhetorical question for gun owners

Proponents of gun control often point toward the dangers inherent with the presence of lethal devices, especially weapon, in the home.   What you eventually end up with is a divergence of two equally important issues.   First, the safety hazards that accompany the risk of an accident or crime of passion in the home, and second, the risks of not having weapons readily available to fend off an attack.    Speculation abounds regarding which issue is going to be the most important in a given situation.    Thirdly, there has to be the issue of legality with regard to the particular weapons and the risks taken with regard to the legal system.   This factor is less prone to speculation since most of its sub elements are known and can be dealt with accordingly.

Obviously, the one way to have the weapons "safe" in the most extreme way is to not have them around at all.   In this extreme view, you do not retain weapons at all yet would, in theory, maintain the means to obtain them if you need them.   This is problematic at best, and assumes the worst case scenario for the behavior of those in your household, and best case scenario for obtaining weapons if you need them.   Yet, while sounding absurd, there are circumstances where this is unfortunately, advisable.    Consider these extremes:

1, with a minimum point score, you should either not have weapons on he premises, or have them deeply hidden and very secure.   With a maximum point score, you want loaded weapons in every room, plenty of spare magazines, (loaded), and will most likely be carrying a weapon on your person.   Your three major overall factors in this risk assessment are the legal risk, the security threat risk, and the safety risk.

The real question is how to treat all of the situations that were in between the two extremes.   That is where the security game gets very complex and the survivor has to carefully consider all of the possible factors involved.

In this threat and risk analysis table which will probably be expanded and updated as time goes on, you can see how various factors can weigh in on the decision to keep weapons or even loaded and ready weapons in the home, or in your immediate reach in a vehicle.   A highly dysfunctional family living in the penthouse suite of a building in a gated district of town with ample security on the outside is going to be better off not keeping weapons around the house.   Don't think this situation is unrealistic at all either.   It continues to exist throughout some areas that do have strict gun control like New York City which is a haven for dysfunctional third world UN diplomats, exiled ruling families and fourth generation trust fund babies.   On the flip side, a tight knit family of mostly adults living in war torn Croatia should probably not only have some loaded weapons around, but needs to consider up-gunning to better weapons and posting a rotating watch schedule with a challenge and password protocol.

Your typical American family does have some more complex issues to work out, and while this single page of risk assessment factors may seem complex, realize that the risk assessment process for heads of state and their families is considerably more complex, but in the end, it has to break down to the same three major factors of legality, threat level and risk.
